Our mission is to ensure a simple, speedy, and hassle-free procedure for obtaining an Indian permanent account number. Since 2007, we have been assisting non-resident Indians, foreigners, and companies throughout the United Kingdom (Great Britain, Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and England) in acquiring their PANs from India, irrespective of Aadhaar card availability. Whether it is for a new application, duplicate reprint, corrections, or changes, we cater to NRIs, PIOs, OCIs, foreign citizens, British nationals, and organizations, handling a wide range of cases.
PAN card is an identity card issued by the "income tax department of India" in a laminated plastic format bearing a unique alpha-numeric number also known as a PAN number - for the indvidual who applied for it. One can consider NINO, also known as a national insurance number equivalent to a PAN number in the UK.
An NRI and OCI, along with British citizens can apply for their PAN numbers (sometimes referred as a NRI PAN card) directly from the Indian government website or using any authorized PAN agency. Also to mention, that the process to file a PAN card application from UK is pretty straight forward, which involves the below steps:
Here are some benefits of having a PAN card for non-resident Indians and foreign passport holders (including OCI and PIO card holders):
1. Income Tax Purposes: NRIs and foreign citizens who engage in financial transactions in India, such as earning income or investing in Indian assets, may be required to file income tax returns. A PAN card is essential for these individuals to fulfill their tax obligations and report their income accurately.
2. Opening Bank Accounts: Many banks in India require PAN card details to open new accounts, including savings accounts, fixed deposit accounts, and NRE/NRO accounts. So anyone, who wish to maintain banking relationships or conduct financial transactions in India often need a PAN card for this purpose.
4. Property/Real Estate Transactions: When purchasing or selling immovable property in India, a PAN card is necessary. It is used to complete property transactions, including registration and filing of property-related documents.
5. Obtaining Loans: Many Indian financial institutions require a PAN card when individuals apply for loans. It helps verify identity, assess creditworthiness, and track financial history, making loan processing and disbursal smoother.
6. Starting a Business: Those interested in establishing a business entity in India, such as a company, partnership firm, or LLP, often need a PAN card. It is necessary for obtaining registrations, licenses, and complying with tax obligations related to business operations.
7. Avoiding Withholding Tax: Without a PAN card, individuals may be subject to higher withholding tax rates on certain income sources in India. By obtaining a PAN card, they can provide the card details to ensure appropriate tax deductions at the prescribed rates.
It's important to note that the specific requirements and procedures for obtaining a PAN card may vary for non-residents and foreign nationals, and they must consult the official website of the Indian Income Tax Department or seek professional advice for accurate and up-to-date information.
Basically you require a passport copy and address proof copy showing your address in the UK. For Identity proof, you need to submit your passport copy, and as a proof of address (POA) you may provide your bank statement, or utility bill showing your full name and current address. Please be advised that the above documentation is for applicants who wish to get the delivery of their PAN cards in the UK. However, if you wish to receive your card within India, then the documentation involved would be different. So kindly check the paperwork for different categories right here.
No, it is not necessary to possess an OCI card in order to obtain a PAN number from India. The requirement is optional, which means that both OCI holders and non-OCI applicants can apply without any difficulty. The following procedure applies to both OCI cardholders and non-OCI applicants (holding a UK or foreign passport) who wish to apply for a PAN:
1. Apply through an
authorized agency
or directly from the Indian government website.
2. Fill the online application or download form 49AA from UTIITSL (UTI Infrastructure and Technology Services Limited), Protean eGov Technologies Limited official website, or NSDL (National Securities Depository Limited) e-Governance website - and fill it manually.
3. Once the form is filled (both online or offline/manually) print the form along with necessary documents, including proof of identity such as a passport, OCI card (optional) issued by the Government of India, and attach a POA (proof of address) like: UK utility bill or a bank statement showing your UK address.
4. Make the payment either through credit card, debit card, net banking, or by using a demand draft.
5. No attestation of documents is required for most foreign citizens including OCIs. However please do check all the requirements here.
6. If you have a PAN Card when you were a Indian resident, and later became an OCI, it is advisable that you continue using the PAN Card which you already have. However, you need to update your OCI status and UK address in your government PAN details.
It is important to note that all applicants must have a UK passport and OCI card to get started. In case you do not hold an OIC (OCI card), you are still eligible to apply for your Indian PAN card using your UK or any other foreign passport.

Yes, a PIO can also apply for a PAN. Please note that PIO cards are now called OCI cards. According to the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2015, all PIO card holders are 'deemed to be' OCI card holders with effect from January 9, 2016. This means that all existing PIO card holders were automatically granted OCI status on that date. However, the "Ministry Of Foreign Affairs" have advised all PIO card holders to get their PIO cards updated or converted into an OCI card at their earliest.
Thus, In order to apply for a PAN number, a 'Person Of India Origin' (PIO), need to provide his PIO card copy and UK/British passport along with a proof of address in the UK that reflects his full name. Such an application from a PIO card be filed on the same portal that are used by other applicant categories. Mainly UTIITSL, PROTEAN, NSDL and Authorized PAN agency portals.
